Isle of Palms
Located East of the Cooper River and north of the Charleston Harbor, the “IOP” is home to more than 4000 permanent residents. This is an upscale community located on one of Charleston’s barrier islands. With 6 miles of sandy beaches the Isle of Palms is a hot spot in the summertime for tourists and locals. Great dining and nightlife ensure these folks will keep coming back.
In the mid 1940’s development began on the island in an effort to provide low cost housing to veterans returning from World War II. The area slowly began to develop into a bedroom community and became more desirable for vacation getaways. In the 1970’s the northern third of the island was developed into what is now known as Wild Dunes Resort. There’s plenty of tennis here and two nationally recognized golf courses designed by Tom Fazio.
The Isle of Palms Recreation Department offers activities for adults from yoga to team sports such as softball. There are plenty of children’s programs as well. The island also has a full service marina with deep sea fishing, kayak rentals, jet ski rentals and many other water activities available. If you are looking for a permanent beach spot to call your own or even a second home, the Isle of Palms is a great place to start your search.

Together the eight districts educate approximately 48,500 PK-12 students in 41 Elementary Schools, 14 Middle Schools, 8 High Schools, 12 Magnet Schools, 4 Charter Schools, and 9 Programs.
